The population of Singapore reached 5.7 million based on the population report released in September 2019 of which 3.5 million are citizens, 1.68 million are non-residents and 530,000 permanent residents.

There are more foreign workers as a result of an increase in work permit holders, demand in the services sector and more construction.

New citizen grew to 22,550 in 2018 as compared to 22,076 in 2017. Majority of new citizens are from South-East Asian countries.

The report indicated that immigration helps to keep the citizen population from shrinking due to a more aged population and low birth rates.

On a longer-term, more foreigners will likely be attracted to come to Singapore and this will help to ease boost the rental of smaller residential units.
